2 weeks old fetus (baby)

Week 2 of fetal development

As the egg matures through the second week, ovulation usually occurs around day 14, in a 28 days cycle (ovulation is the rupture of the follicle to discharge the egg ready for fertilisation). It may vary from day 9 to 16 if you have an irregular cycle. Mid-cycle, day 14 is when you are most likely to conceive. Although as many as 300 million sperm are ejaculated into the vagina, only a few hundred reach the fallopian tube, and only one will fertilise the egg in one of the fallopian tubes.

The sex of your baby is determined by the presence of either the X or the Y chromosome in the sperm, which fertilises the egg. If the sperm carries a Y chromosome, you will have a boy and if it is a X-bearing sperm, you will have a baby girl. Therefore, the father determines your baby’s gender.
