37 weeks old fetus (baby)

Week 37 of fetal development

This is when your baby ‘s head drops down to your pelvis. You feel a little better as the pressure on your internal organs eases. Your urge to pass urine increases as the head presses on the bladder. The baby is still growing, so the uterus will rise again to the level of your breastbone by week 40.

Your baby

The baby is still growing but is clinically ready to be born. It weighs around 2950 gm.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Your doctor will confirm the baby’s position clinically and also by means of a coloured ultrasound. If the position is not head down, such as breech, transverse lie etc, or if there is a twin pregnancy, the doctor will decide the time and mode of delivery.
  • Time for you to know the symptoms of labour. They are- pain coming at intervals from back to front, any blood-stained discharge or mucous, fresh bleeding, gush of water coming out as the water bag bursts.
  • Keep an eye on your baby’s movement. Normally, there should be about 8-10 movements a day. Inform your doctor if there are too many or too few movements, as it indicates the baby’s condition.
  • Keep up with your supplements.
  • Learn about pain relief during labour from your doctor.
  • Plan your labour with your doctor. Discuss all possible ways of delivering your baby, such as normal delivery at home or in the hospital, chances of surgery, forcep delivery and episiotomy.
  • Keep your labour bag ready.
  • You should visit your doctor every week now.
