36 weeks old fetus (baby)

Week 36 of fetal development

The top of your uterus is reaching its highest point, just below your breastbone. It makes you breathless and in pain during breathing. You are now gearing up for birth. Attend the antenatal classes and share your experience with fellow travellers.

Your baby

The baby weighs 2750 gm now. The skull is firm but not hard and adjusts while passing through the birth passage. The most important point is that the baby’s lung maturity gets completed this week. You can give birth to your baby any time after this week without any danger to the baby’s life.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Time for you to know the symptoms of labour. They are- pain coming at intervals from back to front, any blood-stained discharge or mucous, fresh bleeding, gush of water coming out as the water bag bursts.
  • Keep an eye on your baby’s movements. Normally, there should be about 8-10 movements a day. Inform your doctor if there are too many or too few movements, as they indicate the baby’s condition.
  • Keep up with your supplements.
  • Learn about pain relief during labour from your doctor.
  • Plan your labour with your doctor. Discuss all possible ways of delivering your baby, such as normal delivery at home or in the hospital, chances of surgery, forceps delivery and episiotomy.
  • Keep your labour bag ready.
  • You should visit your doctor every week now.
