With quiz shows like Kaun Banega Karorepati riding high on the popularity wave in India, ‘general knowledge’ or the quest to amass trivia in the mind has suddenly become fashionable among children and adults alike.

It goes without saying that a child or an adult must be encouraged to explore the world around. For parents it is not enough to buy their child expensive encyclopaedias. They must be willing partners in the quest to learn from their surroundings as well:

  • Many a time we are so busy with our daily routines that while travelling we tend to be blind to many things. And yet the simplest thing, from the traffic lights, name of roads, major landmarks as well as the flower on the roadside can be an interesting way of absorbing new experiences.
  • Reading a newspaper helps to a large extent in keeping abreast of events across the world. Parents should encourage their children to do so, too.
  • Parents should make it a habit to discuss any two events that the child has read from the newspaper. It could be politics, arts, culture, sports or films. It’s surprising how often a fresh perspective emerges from the questions of children.
  • Since television is a reality most of us cannot wish away, try to watch selective programmes that help you and your child to discover new facets of the world.
  • Your child may be curious or interested in a specific subject. Take care to nurture this passion.
  • Knowledge is about balancing your experience with what you have gleaned of the world through the media around. The ability to articulate is a big quality, so encourage your child to record their experiences in word, sketch or some other medium. It will stand her or him in good stead.
